Conversation Learning Theory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversation_TheoryConversation Theory is what we experience as instructors when we design classes with A/B partner talk or small groups led by teachers. This is the circle conversation part of the "Propeller Model". Students need to dialogue about what they are learing. Each student needs to have the metalearning vocabulary to dialogue together about learning. I will use this now on The Propeller Model!…See More

Questioning for Inquiry Based Learning and AFL

"I'm just not doing enough!" is how a colleague greeted me this morning when I asked how her 'Inquiry' unit was going; and, that was what I was feeling this morning. How will learning about their experiences influence my future and transform my ideas of what it means to be a Canadian citizen?" What I learned at Professional Development today.

I have neglected the complexities of the UDL principle of multiple means of engagement. When I started with UDL, I believed it was about offering students choice about assignments, adding poetry and art and music, asking for feedback and finding out what students liked best. I worked on creating a community of learners and a place for calm, ordered sharing, discussion, reading, writing and numeracy. And it is all of those things but we know so much more about what children’s brains look like…See More

November Inquiry Blues Turns to December ENGAGEMENT!

Last week my Humanities 9 students had no idea what I was talking about! A mind map with four sections: Art, Culture, Geography and Sustainability. Learning outcomes around the geographic regions of N. America (Ch 6), Aboriginal Peoples of N. America (Ch 7) and first contact (Ch 8). The Inquiry question: What can the canoe teach us about where we live, who we are, how we express ourselves and what we want to become as Canadians? What aspect of the canoe guides your future? I mean it seems clear…See More

September is already over

I found my way back home from a year in Ottawa and I started September in a new school with a new assignment.Secondary teaching Humanities 8 and 9 and some Math and Science 8.My classroom has a 'chalk' board on one side and a white board running down the other side. I have a computer with the internet hooked up to a projector on the ceiling. The computer is at the back of the class and the projector at the front. My VP was able to get the projector facing the side so that when I am at the…See More

It is an afternoon position within our school with Greater St. Albert Catholic.  I teach grade four in the morning.  I was lucky enough to be a participant for three years with the provincial technology one-one pilot project.  My background is special education - I love those behaviour challenges!  I just want to make sure this is a position that continues so it is a matter of defining the role and making sure others realize the value of it!  Is anyone else in a position where they go into other classrooms and support teachers at the elbow?

Hi Kerry,

The link to Mrs Anderson's class wiki doesn't work.

It's funny that you share VoiceThread as an example--we're  posting a VoiceThread for people to comment on Guideleine5 later today.

See you there.

Thanks for your energetic participation in the discussions.
