Current UDL postdoctoral fellow Fran Smith (fsmith@cast.org) developed an observational tool and survey in her dissertation at George Washington University. You may want to touch base with her. Also, check out the new post-secondary education and UDL page on the National Center. There are several higher ed institutions that are moving UDL into their teache prep programs.

Feedback welcome!!
Comment by Terilyn Colacino on February 10, 2012 at 2:55pm @George- I will keep posts on the progress I make, as I hope to utilize this network for continual feedback and input.
@Joy- Fantastic, I will definitely contact her, thank you for the connection!
@Loui- Tuesday I meet with my dissertation chair to discuss in detail the subjects of research. I am not sure if I should just contact teacher ed programs in California, or contact programs that are recognized as leaders in teacher ed reform (if I dare call it that). I don't think I want to limit the study to only undergrad programs. I would even go as far as speaking with Teach For America so that I have a diverse sampling.
@everyone- This is a wonderful way to verbalize ideas and hopefully make them a reality. I am a huge advocate of UDL and my goal in this dissertation and future work is to move UDL Framework to the foreground of teacher ed programs when they hit on Educational Psychology. UDL is steeped in learning and motivation theories. I just finished aligning the principles to Cognitive Load Theory, Zone of Proximal Development, Self-Determination Theory, and Goal Orientation Theory. I found these four to be the "big hitters."
Comment by Joy Zabala on February 10, 2012 at 2:50pm Terilyn, this is not really a comment about research that has been done, but rather about someone you might want to contact. Dr. Denise Simard is at the State University of New York Plattsburg where she and her colleagues have been not only teaching ABOUT the UDL Framework but also been using the UDL Framework TO teach their education majors, both special and general. I am sure she would have interesting information to share. Her email address is: Denise.Simard@plattsburgh.edu. Tell her Joy says hello! :)
Terilyn, are you only looking at undergraduate programs?
Please share what you find out. I am very interested in what teacher training programs are teaching and using UDL.
Comment by Terilyn Colacino on February 10, 2012 at 2:19pm I am starting the dissertation process and am interested in finding out what universities teach the UDL Framework to teacher education candidates. Then find out if the UDL Framework is taught to those that are on the regular education track as well as those on the education specialist track. Once those schools have been determined, I would like to conduct interviews and surveys to the faculty and their teacher ed candidates as to the importance of UDL and the impact that UDL may have on learners with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Any feedback or suggestions of current research in this area is greatly appreciated.
Comment by PattiKR on November 22, 2011 at 12:21pm Thanks George for adding your suggestions on the Critical Elements, UDL Instructional Process and Assumptions documents.
What do others think?
Instructional Process: These seem very learner focused, especially Step 2. It is important to remember that UDL is about the learning environemnt not an individual student. In Step 4, under Representation, I would not use the word "present", it implies the teacher is the provider of information and knowledge. In Step 5 I believe the need for data should be added to each of the bullets not just the 1st bullet.
Testable Assunptions of UDL in Practice: While I agree with them all, there may be too many to make them memorable. I also didn't see enagagment, which I believe is critical.
