no i am not sure of a good resource. There is Tar Heel Reader but I don't think it has the audio and other capabilities you are looking for. CAST's UDL studio has a small number of books so far but it does have the option to embed prompts and elicit responses from readers. If you find others please share them with us!

Hi Peggy and Anne:

Thanks for your feedback.  I appreciate knowing that since the books are in the public domain that I can just use the text without worrying about copyrights. 

Other than creating books on Book Builder, are either of you aware of any quality resources for electronic books that include audio capability, a dictionary, and hot spots that give students prompts to help them with reading comprehension?  I am looking for those types of pre-made resources as well.  I'd appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks!

HI Carey -

To add to Peggy's notes, at the moment we don't have remix capability on our model books but we'll register the request. Copying and pasting text is kind of awkward but I think it's the only option for now. I'd suggest copying into a word doc or other text file, then use that as the source for your version of the book.

Hi Carey,

Yes, you can take the text and make your own books. The challenge is you will need to create totally new books, sorry to say that you can't copy and edit existing books. No, since the books are in the public domain, you don't need to get permission from the authors.

Yes, I agree that the out of copyright materials are lacking for young children. The Beatrix Potter books are probably some of the best that exist.

Thanks Peggy.  Yes.  I have checked out the model books and those in the library.  I may opt to use those.  Can they be further customized if desired - for example to add audio if desired? Do I need to get permission from the authors before doing so?  I did check out the resources to find links to books out of copyright but they didn't seem to have much for very young kids.  Thanks for your help.

Check out the model books as there are many for 1st and 2nd grade students. Also check resources to find links to text that is out of copyright.

I had a follow-on question to the one I just posted. I see there are many examples of free online electronic books.  Would the text from those stories be something we could use in bookbuilder since they are already posted free for people to use?  Thanks.
